Driver to surrender in hit-and-run that hurt girl

February 21, 2012

A 32-year-old woman will surrender to police Tuesday for leaving the scene of an accident last week in which her car struck a 9-year-old girl in the city's Parkside section, her attorney said.

The accident occurred last Tuesday in the 4800 block of Merion Avenue. Surveillance video showed the girl on a bicycle about to enter the street when she saw the car approaching. Instead of backing up, she got off the bike and tried to run across the street. She was struck and thrown several feet. She was taken to Children's Hospital of Philadelphia with minor injuries.

The woman, who lives in Philadelphia, came forward to police and is cooperating with the investigation, her attorney, Michael Giampietro, said. "She feels terrible" about leaving the scene, he said. - Robert Moran
