South Jersey girls' basketball notes

Washington Township coach Jen Natale insists the Giedemann twins don't really like the spotlight. It's a tough assertion to make. The evidence, overwhelmingly, suggests the opposite.

It has been almost a year since the twins helped erase a 13-point, second-half deficit to lead Washington Township to an improbable win over Cherry Hill East in the South Jersey Group 4 girls' basketball final - the culmination of a Cinderella run that Kelly and Kylie Giedemann orchestrated as freshmen.

Tuesday night, the identical-twin sophomores combined for a 10-for-10 performance from the foul line in the final minutes of regulation in a win over Lenape that secured the Minutemaids a share of the Olympic Conference American Division title.

They might not be flashy. They might not bask in the spotlight.

But there's something about that spotlight that agrees with the 5-foot-6 guards. And as they enter their second South Jersey Group 4 tournament next week, the Giedemanns once again will be center stage.

"We don't really focus on that too much," Kylie Giedemann said. "We're used to receiving a lot of pressure during games. But, for me personally, it comes down to staying composed. . . . There may not be a lot of opportunities in those tight situations, but I think we know how to attack when we do get an opportunity."

The South Jersey Group 4 tournament holds as much intrigue as any of the area's sectional brackets.

The second-seeded Minutemaids (21-3) and No. 3 Lenape (21-4), which split two meetings this season, could play for a third time in the semifinals. The winner could be looking at a rematch with No. 1 Shawnee, which beat Lenape and Washington Township this season.

No. 5 Williamstown (18-5) is also in the mix for the title; the Braves lost to the Minutemaids this season but beat Lenape. And Eastern, another strong Olympic American team, could be waiting for the Minutemaids in the second round.

Lenape has several quality wins this season, including over Washington Township, Holy Cross, and perennial state power Neptune. But three of the four teams the Indians lost to are in the South Jersey Group 4 tournament.

"Of course they are," Lenape coach Rob Hummel said with a laugh. "But hopefully, we see those teams again soon . . . We would love to see [Washington Township] again. . . . If we're lucky enough to see them in the playoffs, it'll be another great game."
