Temple committee members 'discuss contracts'

Posted: March 01, 2012

THE ATHLETICS committee of the Temple Board of Trustees did not talk yesterday afternoon, as had been reported it would, according to a blog post on the Temple Times.

Instead, the board's executive committee met to "discuss contracts," according to Ray Betzner, the assistant vice president of communications. It is believed that Temple will be asked to join the Big East, and the Owls would have to work out a financial exit strategy for leaving the MAC for football and Atlantic 10 for all other sports.

A source with very good knowledge of the situation said the purpose of the full board meeting was to inform the members about the costs and details of such a move, and the requirements of the Big East. No Big East source says Temple has been invited yet.

The Big East needs an eighth football member now that West Virginia has left for the Big 12 and Boise State wasn't financially able to come in as the replacement 1 year early. Sources have said Temple will have to pay $3.5 million to get out of its MAC obligation immediately, and $2 million to leave the A-10 with less than a year's notice.

There's always a chance the Owls could join the Big East for football this season and for everything else in 2013.

A vote of the full Big East membership, which includes the basketball schools, is required. Any vote requires a 72-hour notification. According to sources, no such notification has taken place. The Big East presidents are scheduled to meet at next week's men's conference basketball tournament in New York.
