Big East might vote Wednesday on admitting Temple

Posted: March 06, 2012

Signs are pointing toward a vote Wednesday by Big East presidents on Temple's membership in the conference at a regularly scheduled meeting in New York.

According to a Big East source, the Owls are on the agenda "as a possible vote on a new member" to join the league in 2012. That would take care of urgent football-scheduling needs for the conference.

If Temple joins for all sports, it remains unclear when the rest of the teams will join the league. The conference needs an eighth football member for next season because West Virginia left for the Big 12.

Assuming Temple receives and accepts an invitation, the school would have to quickly negotiate exit fees. The Owls are members of the Mid-American Conference for football and the Atlantic Ten Conference for all other sports.

The MAC has a $2.5 million fee for an exit with two years' notice. So Temple would have to try to negotiate an immediate exit similar to West Virginia's from the Big East.
