Library's future is panel topic

Posted: March 13, 2012

A FREE PANEL discussion on the future of the Philadelphia Free Library as it faces challenges from the recession and the Internet will be held at 6 p.m. tomorrow.

The discussion, hosted by Pew Charitable Trusts, will be held in the Free Library at 1901 Vine St.

It will focus on questions including where libraries should focus their energy and funds, how they will handle their evolving role as providers of social services, and government resources.

Another question is whether the changing role of libraries will alter the way they are viewed by officials who provide most library funding.

Mayor Nutter will be on hand to discuss these issues along with Larry Eichel, project director of Pew's Philadelphia Research Initiative, and Donald Kimelman, managing director of Pew's Philadelphia program.

The event, which is open to the public, will be moderated by WHYY's Dave Davies, a former Daily News reporter. Pew asks those interested in attending to RSVP at www.pewtrusts.org/libraryevent.
