2012 vs. 2011? Do the math

Posted: March 13, 2012

2012 > 2011.

So far, at least, that's the case for District 12's basketball teams with regard to the assorted PIAA state tournaments.

In '11, the D-12 entrants captured 10 of 15 first-round games for a winning percentage of .667. Then came last weekend and the first-rounders in all four, enrollment-based classifications and, guess what, the Pub/Cath guys actually did better, going 11-4 for .733.

Only Philadelphia Electrical and Technology Charter (14 points in AAA) and Samuel Fels (nine in AAAA) suffered no-doubt setbacks while Delaware Valley Charter (two in AA, in two overtimes) and St. Joseph's Prep (four in AAAA) were alive until the very last moments.

The second-round games will be played tonight and tomorrow night. Seven wins would match 2011's total and that performance might need an asterisk because, in AA, two squads played each other (Roberts Vaux topped Prep Charter). This time, there will be no intradistrict showdowns.

For the record, nine District 1 teams remain alive. D-1 holds a huge edge, 5-2, in the glamour classification, AAAA.
