Dorothy Kulp Gerson, 99, a former music teacher at Springside School in Chestnut Hill, died Dec. 30, of respiratory failure at Spring House Estates, the retirement community in Lower Gwynedd.

A memorial service was set for 1 p.m. Thursday, March 22, in the auditorium at the Estates, 728 Norristown Rd., Lower Gwynedd.

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Gerson graduated from Germantown High School in 1930 and earned an associate degree in music at a junior college in Massachusetts in 1932.

Mrs. Gerson began at Springside as a music volunteer in the 1950s and was coordinator of instrumental music and choral conductor from the 1960's into the 1980s, her daughter Barbara Machler said.

In the summers at Camp Med-O-Lark in Washington, Maine, Mrs. Gerson began as a music teacher in the 1940s and was the program director for 18 years, from the 1940s into the 1960's, her daughter said.

She was a member of the board of directors at Settlement Music School during the directorship of Sol Schoenbach, who retired in 1981, her daughter said.

Since 1982, she had been a member of the Society of the Companions of the Holy Cross, an Episcopal and Anglican women's organization, for which she was a summer organist at its Adelynrood Retreat and Conference Center in Byfield, Mass.

Besides her daughter Barbara, Mrs. Gerson is survived by daughter Katharine G. DeBolt and a grandson. Her husband, Robert, died in 1995.
