Former president returning to lead West Catholic

Posted: March 24, 2012

Brother Richard Kestler, a former principal and president of West Catholic High School, will become its president again, the Archdiocese of Philadelphia and the Brothers of the Christian Schools announced Friday.

Kestler has been the president of La Salle College High School, a private Catholic boys' college-prep school in Wyndmoor, for the last seven years. He will assume the post at West on July 1.

He will replace Brother Tim Ahern. Ahern was the only president among four archdiocesan high schools targeted for closing this winter who did not file an appeal. He resigned Feb. 9, saying the atmosphere at the school had become "untenable."

West teachers had submitted their own appeal to Archbishop Charles J. Chaput.

Last month, Chaput announced that West and the three other schools facing closure in June would remain open, thanks to $12 million in donations and pledges. He said an independent foundation would be created to raise $100 million in the next five years to help all Catholic schools.

Kestler was West's president from 1999 to 2005. He was principal of what was then West Catholic School for Boys from 1973 to 1979.

At La Salle College High School, Kestler will be succeeded by Brother James Butler, the principal of Christian Brothers Academy in Lincroft, N.J. Butler has been a member of La Salle's board of trustees for nearly a decade.
