After finding a slew of stolen bicycles, Philadelphia Police are giving theft victims a chance to stake a claim.
While rescuing 11 dogs from an apparently illegal dog-fighting operation in the 2200 block of West Lehigh Avenue, police found about 75 bikes in the basement.
Although a few might be described as "high end," most are common models that have seen their share of use, possibly by college students, according to a detective.
In some cases, police have located owners through theft reports.
The rest, about 50 bikes, will go on display from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Major Crimes Headquarters, Whitaker and Macalester Streets, at the southeastern edge of Feltonville.
"People are encouraged to bring whatever they may have to help prove ownership in addition to a complaint number from any police reports they filed in regard to the thefts," according to the announcement.
Police have a detailed list of the make, model, color and serial number of each bike, and potential claimants can try to check in advance with a phone call to 215-685-9130.
Friday will be the last chance to call in a claim, the detective said. Police have to dispose the remaining bikes by Monday because of a lack of storage space.
