Union to host Aston Villa

Posted: March 28, 2012

THE UNION will host Barclays English Premier League club Aston Villa in a friendly on Wednesday, July 18, at PPL Park at 7:30 p.m.

One of the oldest clubs in England, Aston Villa, located in Birmingham, has won the FA Cup and the old First Division championship seven times each and the League Cup five times. Included on the current roster are American goalkeeper Brad Guzan and midfielder Eric Lichaj and English national-team members Emilie Heskey, Darren Bent and Gabriel Agbonlahor.

The English players and several other members of the squad might be unavailable depending on their playing for their national teams in the European championships in June.

Aston Villa will be the third English club the Union has faced, following Manchester United (1-0 loss in 2010) and Everton (1-0 win last year).

Union forward Danny Mwanga spent 10 days training with Aston Villa at the end of January before rejoining Union for preseason training.

The game will be the last played at PPL Park before the Union hosts the MLS All-Star Game on July 25.
