A Gloucester County woman died early this morning, shortly after she was discovered by firefighters who responded to a blaze in her Washington Township home.

Darlene J. Starrett, 56, was pronounced dead at Kennedy Memorial Hospital, according to a spokesman for the Gloucester County Prosecutor's Office. She was found inside her single-family residence on the unit block of Golfview Drive by firefighters responding to a 12:30 a.m. call. The house was fully engulfed in flames.

Officials at the scene said that Starrett was apparently alive when she was carried down a ladder by rescuers.

Starrett's son, with whom she shared the house, was at work at the time, the Prosecutor's Office spokesman said.

Starrett will undergo an autopsy today, he said. The cause of the fire is undetermined, pending an inspection by an electrical engineer.
