Big Five announces honors

Fran Dunphy was named the Big Five men's basketball coach of the year for the third straight season and fourth time in his six years at Temple, the Owls' Shey Peddy was named the women's player of the year for the second straight season, and Penn's Zack Rosen was named the men's player of the year.

Villanova's Harry Perretta was named the women's coach of the year.

The awards, announced Tuesday, were the result of voting by the Big Five head coaches and selected media.

All recipients will receive their awards at the Herb Good Banquet on April 23, in Temple's Liacouras Center.

Rosen (St. Benedict's Prep, N.J.), was joined by Temple's Ramone Moore (Southern) and Khalif Wyatt (Norristown); Villanova's Maalik Wayns (Roman Catholic); and St. Joseph's Langston Galloway on the first team.

La Salle's Tyreek Duren (Neumann-Goretti), Earl Pettis (Neumann-Goretti), and Ramon Galloway; St. Joe's Carl Jones and C.J. Aiken (Plymouth-Whitemarsh); and Temple's Juan Fernandez were named to the second team.

Peddy was joined by Penn's Alyssa Baron, Villanova's Laura Sweeney (Cherokee), La Salle's Brittany Wilson, and St. Joe's Michelle Baker (Brandywine) on the first team.

Temple's Victoria Macaulay and Kristen McCarthy, La Salle's Alexis Scott, Villanova's Lauren Burford, and St. Joe's Kelly Cavallo were named second team.

SOFTBALL:Paige Collings homered twice and drove in six runs to become Drexel's all-time leader in both categories as the host Dragons topped La Salle, 10-2, in a nonleague game. Collings has 26 home runs and 111 RBIs. Ashley Botelho had 25 homers and 108 RBIs in a career that ended in 2010.

Elsewhere: Elizabeth Cushing (Padua Academy) had four hits in a nonleague doubleheader sweep of Penn State-Abington to become the fifth player in Swarthmore history with 100 career hits. . . . Widener's Christine Mattis (Upper Darby) pitched a complete-game, five-hitter in a 5-0 win over Haverford to give the Pride a split of a nonleague doubleheader.

GOLF: Wilmington's Dan Ott (Woodstown) was named the Central Atlantic Collegiate Conference golfer of the year.

GYMNASTICS: Temple senior Katie Canning was named to the all-Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference team after winning the all-around title in the championship meet March 31. Fellow Owls senior Kaity Watson was named to the second team in the bars.
