Cherry tops White in Temple spring game

SOPHOMORE running back Kenny Harper scored two touchdowns - one for each team - as Cherry beat White, 17-10, in Temple's annual spring scrimmage before an announced crowd of 2,500 at Lincoln Financial Field.

For White, Harper was the top rusher with 48 yards and a touchdown on eight carries. Junior quarterback Clinton "Juice" Granger went 14-for-20 for 125 yards. Redshirt freshman wideout Robbie Anderson was the receiving leader with three catches for 43 yards.

For Cherry, sophomore Jalen Fitzpatrick had 40 yards on five carries. Chris Coyer went 6-for-15 for 116 yards and a touchdown to Ryan Alderman, who led the receivers with three catches for 56 yards.

At halftime, six players were recognized as the team's annual spring award winners. Senior running back Matt Brown earned the Mark Bresani Award for spirit and enthusiasm. Sophomore tight end Wanemi Omuso was awarded the Gavin White Local 215 Award, presented to the most improved nonscholarship player. Senior linebacker Ahkeem Smith was the most improved defensive player, while sophomore running back Jalen Fitzpatrick earned most improved offensive player accolades. Junior linebacker Olaniyi Adewole was honored as the most improved special-teams player. Graduating senior offensive lineman Pat Boyle received the Owl Club academic award for highest grade-point average.

Sophomore shooting guard Aaron Brown informed coach Fran Dunphy of his intention to transfer. Temple gave Brown his release. The 6-5 Brown averaged 6.4 points and 14.6 minutes this past season, playing in all 32 games with one start. "He is a good man and we wish him all the best and he has been a valuable member of the team the past two years," Dunphy said in a statement.
