Burlington County vigil to honor crime victims

Posted: April 21, 2012

Crime victims will be honored at a candlelight vigil at 6 p.m. Sunday at the Burlington County College Culinary Arts Center in Mount Holly.

The event, sponsored by the office of Burlington County Prosecutor Robert D. Bernardi, marks the start of National Crime Victims' Rights Week, a weeklong recognition of victims. The public is encouraged to attend.

This year's theme, "Extending the Vision: Reaching Every Victim," targets the need to expand services to all crime victims. According to national statistics from the Department of Justice, more than 50 percent of crimes are not reported each year.

"Victims of crime have historically been an underserved population," Bernardi said in a statement. "The year's theme is an appropriate rallying cry for all of us to continue our efforts to better meet the needs of those who have been directly affected by crime."

Next Saturday, a free 5k run/walk at Smithville Park in Eastampton will close the week's events. Registration is from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m., and entrants may also register online at http://strideforsurvivors2012-eorgf.eventbrite.com/.
