Mets starter Mike Pelfrey has a partial tear in his right elbow and is "99 percent" certain he will have reconstructive Tommy John surgery that will sideline him until next year, the team announced Thursday.
"It's frustrating," Pelfrey said. "I've never been hurt in my life."
Pelfrey is 0-0 with a 2.29 ERA after three starts, and has been a big part of the Mets rotation the previous four years.
"Everything was working," Mets manager Terry Collins said. "To have this happen is a true shame."
For people who can't get enough of the immortal Ted Williams, there's an opportunity brewing in Boston.
Fans can see hundreds of items once owned by the Red Sox slugger at an auction preview that ends Friday. Some of the proceeds from Saturday's auction will benefit the Jimmy Fund, the official Red Sox charity.
Among the nearly 800 on the block - including bats, sports awards, letters, checkbooks, fishing gear, hunting guns, and military records - is a baseball in pristine condition that Babe Ruth autographed for Williams with the inscription: "To my pal Ted Williams, From Babe Ruth."
That ball is expected to fetch $100,000-$200,000, said David Hunt, whose firm, Hunt Auctions, is selling the memorabilia on behalf of Williams' daughter, Claudia.
Williams, the last major- leaguer to bat .400 - he had a .406 average in 1941 - enjoyed a varied life, including as a Marine in World War II and the Korean War, a member of the fishing hall of fame, and a skilled hunter.
