Thomas M. Kain III, 68, of Bryn Mawr, an orthopedic surgeon who was medical director of the Comprehensive Wound Healing Centers at Abington Memorial and Bryn Mawr Hospitals for the last 10 years, died of complications from lymphoma on Thursday, April 26 at his home.

Dr. Kain was the fourth generation of his family to graduate from what is now Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University, where he earned his degree in 1969, his wife, Mary, said in an interview Monday.

Born in Camden, Dr. Kain graduated from Haddonfield Memorial High School in 1961, earned a bachelor’s in biology at the University of Virginia in 1965, and served as a stateside Air Force physician from 1970 to 1972.

Dr. Kain “started out as a wound care physician at Mercy Catholic” Hospital in Southwest Philadelphia, his wife said, and worked there until it closed. Since the late 1970s, she said, he had been an orthopedic surgeon at Mercy Fitzgerald Hospital in Darby Borough and at Riddle Memorial Hospital near Media.

“He was a solo practitioner at Fitzgerald Mercy,” his wife said, and a member of a group practice at Riddle.

He was a member of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, and of the Overbrook Country Club.

Besides his wife, Dr. Kain is survived by his mother, Ruth Kain Palmer; sons Daniel and Patrick; daughters Aileen, Kathleen, and Anne; two brothers, and six grandchildren.

A viewing was set from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, May 1, at Donohue Funeral Home, 3300 West Chester Pike, Newtown Square, with a Funeral Mass set for 11 a.m. Wednesday, May 2, at St. John Neumann Church, 380 Highland Lane, Bryn Mawr. Burial is to be in St. Denis Cemetery, Havertown.
