Thurs. Pa. boys' roundup: Central extends tennis streak

The dominating Central tennis program extended its string of Public League Class AAA championships to six on Thursday when the Lancers defeated visiting Northeast, 4-1, in the team title match.

Central's doubles teams of Bijan Makarachi and Tyrell Cherry, and Avery Mitchell and Richard Kim combined to lose just two games in a pair of straight-set wins.

R. J. Cherry and Daniel Spivack added singles triumphs for the Lancers, who will face Catholic League champ La Salle in the District 12 final at noon on Friday for a berth in the PIAA state tournament.

Public League Class AA. Masterman swept Engineering & Science, 5-0, to claim the league's Class AA crown at 33d and Diamond.

Clayton Matthews and Eli Levy each won singles matches by 6-1, 6-0, and the Blue Dragons earned a berth in the District 12 final.

District 1 Class AAA. Second-seeded Conestoga edged top-seeded Unionville, 3-2, and claimed the District 1 team championship at Perkiomen Valley.

Council Rock North won the third-place matchup, 5-0, over Pennsbury at Perkiomen Valley as three of the five matches went three sets, including singles wins by Mike Stanley and Andy Kwon.

District 1 Class AA. Harriton took the District 1 team trophy after beating Lower Moreland, 3.5-1.5, in the final at Downingtown West.

For the Rams, Sam Borowsky won at second singles, Matt Benstock and Griffin Kibitz prevailed at first doubles, and Jake Ohlbaum and Aaron Lazer took the second-doubles match.

Inter-Ac. Haverford School wrapped up a perfect 19-0 season by clinching the league championship with a 6-1 win at Episcopal Academy. Brothers Zach and Ben Lieb posted singles wins, and the Fords added three-set doubles wins from James Schecter and Brad Scherer, and James Tarte and John Zipf.

Baseball

Springfield (Montco) wrapped up the Bicentennial League Independence Division championship with a 4-2 win over visiting Devon Prep. Doug Bauer (4-1) pitched three innings of one-hit relief, and Chris Bornholdt had two singles and a run batted in.

Catholic. Monsignor Bonner's 3-0 win over visiting Roman Catholic was a two-hit shutout by Ron Scull. Joe Haley contributed two RBIs.

La Salle (15-2 overall, 10-0 division) stayed unbeaten atop the Red Division with a 3-1 win at Archbishop Ryan. Sophomore pitcher Dom Cuoci threw a complete game to boost his league record to 4-0.

Ches-Mont. Sun Valley's Bill Vandergrift fashioned a 5-0 one-hit shutout of visiting Oxford, including a dozen strikeouts. Mario Farnell went 3 for 4 with a home run.

Central. Conestoga rallied from a 3-1 deficit to beat host Lower Merion, 7-3. Jake Carr, Brian Dixon and Jordan Little (three RBIs) had two hits each for the Pioneers.

Suburban One. Andrew Yekel (three hits) and Eric Goldstein each drove in two runs for Upper Dublin en route to a 7-4 win over visiting Plymouth Whitemarsh.

Senior lefty Marty Martens struck out eight in Central Bucks West's 3-0 shutout of visiting Pennridge and helped himself by poking two singles and scoring a run.

Hatboro-Horsham's Casey O'Donnell scattered three hits and struck out nine in an 8-2 win over visiting Central Bucks South. Chris Hens homered and drove in four.

Nonleague. Evan Harvey's bases-clearing triple in the seventh inning wrapped up Archbishop Carroll's 14-1 win at Penncrest.

Lacrosse

Haverford School, ranked No. 1 in the state by phillylacrosse.com, rallied from a 6-5 halftime deficit and avoided an upset bid by visiting Radnor, 12-10, in a nonleague contest. Gavin McBride had three goals and two assists for the Fords, and Radnor's Peter Donato posted three goals and an assist.

Three goals each by Shane Carr, John Moderski and Drew Murray powered Penn Charter past visiting Salesianum, 12-8.
