I like pro soccer, what's wrong with me?

Q: Charles, what’s your opinion on professional soccer? I’ve got friends who absolutely hate it, curse it whenever they see it on TV. I’ve got others who think it’s the greatest thing since sliced bread. I’ve never played, but I find myself getting sucked in when it’s on TV now, especially when it’s one of the really good European teams. Is there something wrong with me?

A: Dude, there’s no law that says you have to like what your friends like. That’s why there’s bacon-flavored soda. I happen to like watching soccer, although I admit I’m not as fanatical about it as our European and South American brothers and sisters. I don’t understand why people would curse it. Just don’t watch it if you hate it. But when you see a championship match on TV with a hundred thousand fans in the stands and each team represents its country and culture it’s a pretty cool experience. But, hey, if you don’t like to watch soccer on TV just change the channel to some other sport. Even better, go get some exercise.

Q: I love my job, and get along well with my boss. But I’m starting to get burned out, and it’s affecting my personal life, my family, etc. I’ve tried to tell my boss this a few times, but she doesn’t seem to listen. Any advice for how to make her really understand that something needs to change?

A: Something needs to change? I hope you got another job waiting for you because the only thing that’s going to change is your employment status. Seriously, if your name isn’t on the company letterhead, there’s really nothing you can do to change your boss or work conditions. She doesn’t have to listen. That’s why she’s the boss and you’re the employee. There’s a fine line between making subtle suggestions about improving working conditions and finding your behind in the unemployment line. Since you’ve had a good relationship with her, you can try the honesty approach and put your concerns on the table, but you’d better be prepared if it doesn’t work out in your favor.
