Giroux wins Wanamaker Award

CLAUDE GIROUX became the face of the Flyers this year. By winning the 2012 John Wanamaker Athletic Award, he has become the embodiment of Philadelphia sports.

Giroux was selected from among 10 finalists for the award, a list that included LeSean McCoy, Bernard Hopkins and Hunter Pence. He had a career-high 93 points.

“This year’s recipients are wonderful representatives of the caliber of individuals in the Philadelphia sports community,” said David Montgomery, the chairman of the Philadelphia Sports Congress.

The Daily News is among the sponsors involved in the award.

Giroux is just the third Flyers player ever to win the award, joining Bobby Clarke (1974) and Bernie Parent (1975).

Flyers owner Ed Snider will receive a Lifetime Achievement Award. Jerry Segal, the namesake of the 22-year golf tournament that raises money for the Magee Rehabilitation Hospital, will be honored with Robert P. Levy Community Service Award. And the Katie Kirlin Fund, the South Philly-based charity, has been named the City of Philadelphia’s Sports Volunteer of the Year.

The awards will be presented during private ceremonies on Tuesday, June 5 in Center City.

“Ed Snider has done so much for Philadelphia throughout his entire career,” said Montgomery, who also is a general partner and president of the Phillies. “Additionally, Jerry Segal has been an inspiration to many and the Kirlin family has exemplified the value and true meaning of giving back to others.”
