Philly duo going to hall

Posted: May 18, 2012

The call to the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame was a long one for two accomplished Philadelphia fighters who, between them, waited 116 years after their respective retirements for Sunday afternoon’s enshrinement.

Lightweight Dorsey Lay, 87, posted a 39-18-1 record with 15 knockout victories in a professional career that spanned from 1942 to ‘48, while lightweight Eddie Corma, 77, was 18-1 with eight stoppages from 1954 to ‘60.

Lay and Corma are among five living inductees who will be honored at Romano’s Catering, Castor Avenue and Winghocking in Juniata Park. They will be on hand to take their bows, as will bantamweight Johnny Carter, 54; Nigel Collins, two-time former editor of The Ring magazine, and promoter/manager/gym proprietor Joe Hand Sr., 75.

Posthumous inductees are former WBA super middleweight champion Steve Little, heavyweights Frank Moran and Joe Rowan, and middleweight Jesse Smith.

Tickets for the event, which begins at 4 p.m., are $55 each. Call John Gallagher at 215-920-8791.
