USP hoops star Rotz to deliver grad speech

Former basketball star Melissa Rotz will receive her doctor of Pharmacy degree and deliver the valedictory speech at the University of the Sciences graduation ceremony on Wednesday night at the Mann Center.

Rotz, a graduate of Central Dauphin High School, was the women's basketball player of the year on the 2011 Inquirer all-academic team, chosen from the Philadelphia region's Division II and III schools.

A four-year starter on the women's basketball team, Rotz has the distinction of graduating from University of the Sciences with the most individual academic honors ever won by a student-athlete at the institution, earning a dozen such awards over her career while performing as the team's starting point guard, the university said.

BASEBALL: St. Joseph's righthander Kyle Mullen (St. Joseph's Prep), Temple third baseman Steve Nikorak and St. Joe first baseman Kevin Taylor all were named first-team all-Atlantic Ten on Tuesday.

La Salle closer Pat Christensen and outfielder Brendan Norton were named to the first all-Academic team.

La Salle relief pitcher Mike McLeod (Truman), St Joe's outfielder Ryan Pater (Central Bucks East) and Temple lefthander Patrick Peterson (Charter School of Wilmington) were named to the all-rookie team.

Rowan catcher Nick Turano was named second team all-Atlantic Region in Division III by the American Baseball Coaches Association and second baseman Brandon Winkler (Paul VI) earned ABCA Gold Glove first-team honors.

Haverford righthander Mike Bozzi was named to the D-III Mid-Atlantic Region all-tournament team.

SOFTBALL: Rowan catcher Nicolina Veneziano was named to the Sports Information Directors of America Academic all-America third team. The senior was first team all-region.

BASKETBALL:Claire Maree O'Bryan of the Hill School will play basketball for Bucknell next season.

FOOTBALL: Quarterback Andrew Lissa of Moorestown and tight end Ryan Kelly of Harriton will be part of Penn's 26-member freshman class in the fall.
