Pracher pitches St. Joe's to A-10 tourney victory

Posted: May 25, 2012

Alex Pracher pitched a five-hitter as St. Joseph's won the first Atlantic Ten tournament game it ever played, shutting out Rhode Island, 3-0, on Wednesday at Houlihan Park in the Bronx.

The former Cherokee star struck out five and walked four to place the Hawks in the winners' bracket.

St. Joe, seeded sixth in the tourney, will meet second-seeded Dayton at 3 p.m. Thursday. The Flyers had a first-round bye.

Rhode Island immediately entered an elimination game against Massachusetts Wednesday night.

Pracher got all the offensive support he would need in the third, when Brett Tiagwad (St. Joe's Prep) singled and came home on Greg Kumpel's two-out RBI single.

Kevin Taylor slugged a solo home run in the fifth and scored again in the ninth on a double by Brian O'Keefe, the freshman catcher's third hit of the day.

Designated hitter Quinn Renner had two hits as did Tiagwad.

Widener's Bill Hollingsworth, a first baseman from Monsignor Bonner, was named third team all-Mid-Atlantic Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association. Hollingsworth led the Commonwealth Conference in batting (.390) and total hits (55).
