Springfield (Montco) is one victory short of a school record for wins in a baseball season after beating Devon Prep, 8-1, in the District 1 Class AA championship game Friday at Spring-Ford.

Pitcher Anthony Scafidi struck out nine to get the complete-game win, and joined teammates Max Vido, Chris Bornholdt, Tyler Bond, and Ian Quigg in driving in a run apiece.

The Spartans (15-6) will face Conwell-Egan on Tuesday in a sub-regional preliminary to the PIAA state tournament.

District 1 Class AAAA. Matt Radyanski's sacrifice fly to left field in the seventh inning scored Kyle Lewis with the winning run in Central Bucks South's 3-2 quarterfinal win at Central Bucks West. South's John Mullin homered in the fifth inning, and Bobby Weittman (6 strikeouts) outdueled Marty Martens (9 strikeouts).

Grant Opalisky's ground ball scored pitcher Conner Crookham, capping a two-run rally in the bottom of the seventh as Hatboro-Horsham jolted visiting Downingtown West, 8-7. Casey Saverio went 3 for 4 with a double, two runs scored, and two runs batted in.

Eric Goldstein knocked in three runs and Zach Walsh handled the pitching for Upper Dublin during an 8-5 triumph over visiting Methacton.

Catholic League. La Salle has a scoreless string of 22 innings over four games after posting its third straight shutout, 10-0, over Archbishop Carroll in the league semifinals at Philadelphia University.

P. J. Acierno homered, Corey Baiada went 3 for 4 with three RBIs, and winning pitcher Dom Cuoci scattered four hits and contributed a two-run triple to the offense.

Neumann-Goretti needed 14 innings to get past Monsignor Bonner, 8-7, at Widener University. The Saints and La Salle will play for the title on Tuesday.

District 12 champ Sam Rudovsky of Masterman and District 1 winner Kyle Seelig of Plumstead Christian are headed for a semifinal showdown Saturday after each easily won a pair of matches on the opening day of the PIAA State Class AA singles tournament at the Hershey Racquet Club.

Rudovsky lost a total of four games in four sets and posted a 6-1, 6-2 quarterfinal triumph over District 7 champion Andre Fick of Sewickley Academy.

Seelig, a freshman, had wins of 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-0 in coasting into the second day.

Also in Class AA, Harriton's Sam Borowsky and Max Blumenthal reached the doubles semifinals with two straight-set wins.

Class AAA. Unionville's Michael Furr and John Wu led a sweep of District 1 winners in the singles quarterfinals. Furr will face Conestoga's Kevin Wang, and Wu will meet North Penn's Mike Buxbaum in Saturday's semifinals.

Conestoga's Jason Sutker and Eric Yen and Radnor's Antoine Martin and Massimo Boni stayed alive in doubles play with quarterfinal wins.
