Report: Lidstrom set to retire

Posted: May 31, 2012

Seven-time Norris Trophy winner Nicklas Lidstrom will announce his retirement Thursday after 20 seasons with the Detroit Red Wings, ESPN.com reported, citing a source.

Lidstrom was the 53rd overall pick of the Wings in the 1989 draft, and was a key figure on four Stanley Cup championship teams.

Lidstrom, 42, put retirement on hold in each of the previous 2 years by signing 1-year contracts. Lidstrom had 34 points and a plus-21 rating that ranked among the league leaders this season. He missed a career-high 11 games due to a bone bruise on his right ankle.
