Firefighter seriously injured battling South Jersey truck fire

Posted: June 01, 2012

Florence Township firefighters were standing behind the trailer when its doors burst opened, possibly from pressure, said State Police Lt. Stephen Jones.

Four to six firefighters were injured, including one who suffered a serious blow to the head trauma as the trailer doors swung open, Jones said.

A helicopter flew the firefighter to Capital Health Regional Medical Center in Trenton where he was treated for serious head trauma. Other injured firefighters went to another hospital.

The truck driver, who was transporting a load of oranges, had pulled over to the highway’s shoulder and was not hurt.

The fire started in the rear brakes about at 1:31 p.m., police said.
