MAX SCHERZER pitched into the seventh inning, Delmon Young homered and the visiting Detroit Tigers beat the Boston Red Sox, 7-3, Thursday night in an American League game.

Scherzer (5-3) retired nine consecutive batters before Nick Punto led off the seventh with a walk, forcing the righthander from the game. He allowed three runs and seven hits in his third consecutive victory, closing out a strong May.

Young hit a solo drive in the eighth to make it 5-3, then added a run-scoring single in the ninth.

Jarrod Saltalamacchia hit his 10th homer for Boston, which was seeking its first four-game sweep against the Tigers since 2004. Josh Beckett (4-4) allowed four runs and a season-high 10 hits in seven innings.

The Red Sox opened May with eight losses in nine games to drop to 12-19 on the year. But they closed out the month with a 14-6 run to pull within three of the division lead.

Young and Quintin Berry each had three hits for Detroit, which finished with 14 overall.

Noteworthy *

New York Yankees catcher Russell Martin said home plate umpire Laz Diaz decided in an unusual way to punish him for arguing balls and strikes in Wednesday's win over the Los Angeles Angels.

Martin said Diaz wouldn't allow him to throw new baseballs back to his pitchers after fouls. Martin said Diaz told him that throwing the balls was "a privilege I had to earn."

Diaz was unavailable for comment because Martin spoke nearly an hour after the game.

In other Yankees new, Yankees general manager Brian Cashman told ESPNNewYork.com that reliever David Robertson is expected to be out at least another 2 weeks because of his rib-cage injury. Robertson has been out since May 11.

* Cleveland Indians designated hitter Travis Hafner underwent arthroscopic surgery on his right knee and is expected to miss at least 1 month and possibly 6 weeks.

The procedure was needed to clean up frayed cartilage, which first flared up in a May 23 game against Detroit.

* Baltimore Orioles outfielder Nick Markakis has a hamate fracture of his right wrist and will undergo surgery on Friday. The injury is believed to have occurred more than a week ago when Markakis slid into a base. He then aggravated it during his final at-bat Tuesday in Toronto. The typical recovery time is 3 to 4 weeks.

* The Los Angeles Dodgers placed centerfielder Matt Kemp on the 15-day disabled list for the second time this month because of a left hamstring strain he sustained Wednesday against Milwaukee. The move came 2 days after he was reinstated from the disabled list.

Kemp left Wednesday night's game against Milwaukee after scoring all the way from first base on a first-inning double by Andre Ethier. He is batting .355 with 12 homers and 28 RBI in 36 games.

The Dodgers promoted second baseman-outfielder Alex Castellanos from Triple A Albuquerque. * The Colorado Rockies placed shortstop Troy Tulowitzki on the 15-day disabled list because of a left groin strain. Tulowitzki felt pain after running out of the batter's box when he grounded out to second base during the Rockies' six-run sixth inning against Houston on Wednesday.
