3 Camden men plead not guilty in casino killing

Three Camden men charged in a fatal casino carjacking in Atlantic City in September pleaded not guilty on Thursday in Superior Court in Atlantic County to felony murder, kidnapping, robbery, weapons offenses, and other charges.

Phillip L. Byrd, 21; Eric Darden, 20; and Raheem D. Simmons, 18, were indicted in April in the kidnapping and fatal shooting of 28-year-old Sunil Rattu, of Old Bridge, Middlesex County. Rattu was shot twice in the head in the backseat of his vehicle on Sept. 18, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Rattu’s girlfriend, 24-year-old Radha Ghetia of Parlin, Middlesex County, also was shot but survived. The two were carjacked from the Trump Taj Mahal Hotel Casino parking garage and forced to drive to an alley near the 500 block of Martin Luther King Boulevard.

The couple had recently received their diplomas as licensed practical nurses and were planning to take their licensing exams soon. They had gone to Atlantic City to celebrate their graduation, a relative said. — Darran Simon
