Obama expresses regret over gaffe

WARSAW, Poland - President Obama has written a letter to the Polish president expressing "regret" for an inadvertent verbal gaffe that caused a storm of controversy in Poland this week.

Obama on Tuesday used the expression "a Polish death camp" while honoring a Polish World War II resistance hero rather than wording that would have made clear that he meant a death camp that Nazi Germany operated on Polish soil during its wartime occupation of Poland.

Warsaw has been waging a campaign for years against phrases such as "Polish death camps" or "Polish concentration camps" to refer to Auschwitz, Treblinka and other German killing sites.

"In referring to 'a Polish death camp' rather than 'a Nazi death camp in German-occupied Poland,' I inadvertently used a phrase that has caused many Poles anguish over the years and that Poland has rightly campaigned to eliminate from public discourse around the world," Obama wrote. "I regret the error and agree that this moment is an opportunity to ensure that this and future generations know the truth."

Border clash kills Israeli, militant

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip - A gun battle along Israel's border with the Gaza Strip on Friday killed a Palestinian militant and an Israeli soldier, the military said, in the latest flare-up along the volatile frontier.

The Israeli military said the Palestinian militant cut through the border fence separating Hamas-run Gaza from southern Israel and opened fire on troops, killing one soldier. Israeli forces killed the militant in the ensuing shootout, said Col. Tal Hermoni.

The border has been mostly calm since the last escalation in March, but shootouts such as Friday's and other violence raise concerns of a new flare-up between Israel and Gaza-based militants. Also Friday, Israeli air strikes hit a car in Gaza, killing one person and seriously wounding two more, said Gaza health official Adham Abu Salmia.

A Palestinian militant group called the Popular Resistance Committees said the men in the vehicle were group members returning from a training camp when their car was struck. The Israeli military said the strikes were in response to two rockets launched Friday from Gaza that landed in southern Israel, causing no damage or injuries.

Norway killer's sanity questioned

OSLO, Norway - Forensic scientists have criticized a report that says confessed mass killer Anders Behring Breivik was sane when he massacred 77 people last year in a bomb attack and shooting spree.

In a letter published Friday, the Norwegian Board of Forensic Medicine questioned why that report had not taken into account "important information" provided by the killer's mother, who said that her son's behavior changed dramatically a year before the July 22 attacks.

Meanwhile, experts testifying in court threw doubt on Breivik's claim that his lethal rampage was a planned suicide attack. Breivik's mental state is the key issue of his trial and will determine his sentencing.
