The Californian

Betfair Hollywood Park, Race 8 - Post 7:30

$150,000 (Grade II), 3 y.o. & up, 1 1/8 miles

1.Game On Dude. . . Chantal Sutherland. . . 2-1

2.Uh Oh Bango. . . Mike Smith. . . 8-1

3.Morning Line. . . Joe Talamo. . . 5-2

4.Prayer for Relief. . . Rafael Bejarano. . . 3-1

5.Kettle Corn. . . Joel Rosario. . . 7-2

Morning Line, the 2010 Pennsylvania Derby winner, came off a long layoff with a giant effort in his first start for John Shirreffs, Zenyatta's trainer. If that race is going to be the norm in 2012, this now-5-year-old could be a major player the rest of the year. Game On Dude was no good in Dubai, but had a terrific 2011, including a strong second in the Breeders' Cup Classic. Prayer for Relief was a very nice 3-year-old last year, but ran the race of his life last out when second to the choice.

* D.J.'s picks:

1. Morning Line

2. Game On Dude

3. Prayer for Relief

The Winning Colors

Churchill Downs, Race 6 - Post 8:30

$100,000 (Grade III), 3 y.o & up, f. & m., 6 furlongs

1.Good Deed. . . Shaun Bridgmohan. . . 4-1

2.Gleaming. . . Calvin Borel. . . 4-1

3.Beat the Blues. . . Miguel Mena. . . 3-1

4.Honey Chile. . . Corey Lanerie. . . 6-1

5.Page Springs. . . Manoel Cruz. . . 30-1

6.Island Bound. . . Leandro Goncalves. . . 10-1

7.Fortune Play. . . Ramon Vasquez. . . 6-1

8.Speedacious. . . Brian Hernandez Jr.. . . 7-2

Beat the Blues has won half her 18 starts, including three of her last four. She has the perfect stalking style in a race with some serious early speed. Island Bound has been in the money in five of her six starts at Churchill. Speedacious has won five straight and has what could be an advantageous outside post.

* D.J.'s picks:

1. Beat the Blues

2. Island Bound

3. Speedacious

The Aristides

Churchill Downs, Race 7 - Post 9:05

$100,000 (Grade III), 3 y.o. & up, 6 furlongs

1.Rothko. . . Corey Nakatani. . . 3-1

2.Global Power. . . Leandro Goncalves. . . 20-1

3.Riley Tucker. . . Miguel Mena. . . 9-2

4.Noble's Promise. . . Corey Lanerie. . . 5-2

5.Good Lord. . . Brian Hernandez Jr.. . . 6-1

6.Will's Wildcat. . . Calvin Borel. . . 4-1

7.Whiskey Rebellion. . . Crystal Carman. . . 30-1

8.Cash Refund. . . Shaun Bridgmohan. . . 5-1

Cash Refund has run two very strong races this year without winning. This could be the breakthrough. Noble's Promise won this race last year with a lifetime effort. Was fifth in the 2010 Kentucky Derby and absolutely seems to love this surface. Good Lord overcame a terrible start and nearly won in an easier spot than this 2 days before the Derby.

* D.J.'s picks:

1. Cash Refund

2. Noble's Promise

3. Good Lord
