Rabid bat found in Upper Merion

A bat found June 1 at the Upper Merion Swim and Tennis Club in King of Prussia has tested positive for rabies, according to Montgomery County health officials.

Two people were bitten by the bat May 29, and are now undergoing post-exposure treatment. Others may have been exposed to the rabid bat as well, and health officials are advising anyone who thinks he or she may have been bitten to seek medical attention or alert officials by calling 610-278-5117.

Bats have tiny teeth, whose marks in human skin disappear quickly, but the wounds should not be ignored, officials said.

Since January, the Montgomery County Health Department has confirmed seven cases in which rabid animals were found: three raccoons, one each in Salford, Perkiomen and Towamencin; two skunks, one each in Upper Merion and Upper Moreland; and two bats, one in Horsham, the other in Upper Merion.
