Man held for trial in fatal beating of takeout owner

A 23-YEAR-OLD West Oak Lane man was held for trial on a murder charge Wednesday in the death of a Chinese-takeout owner whom the defendant attacked two years ago.

On the morning of June 8, 2010, Malik Niblack ambushed owner Jicun Wu outside the takeout store on 66th Avenue near Uber Street. Niblack punched Wu to the ground, then kicked him at least 10 times, severely damaging his pancreas and intestines.

Wu, 44, died March 15 at Albert Einstein Medical Center's Willowcrest rehabilitative facility. He had been at the facility or the next-door hospital for more than 21 months, never recovering enough to return home.

Niblack waived his preliminary hearing Wednesday before Municipal Judge Karen Yvette Simmons. In September, he pleaded guilty to attempted murder in the beating and has been serving a six-to-15-year sentence in state prison. After Wu died, prosecutors filed the murder charge.

In court Wednesday, Wu's wife, Qinhui Chen, who had come to the U.S. from Fujian Province in southeastern China about a decade ago, sat red-eyed with her two sons, 14 and 16. The boys came to Philadelphia from China shortly before their father died.
