Local Catholics to join protest Friday

Posted: June 08, 2012

Catholics from the Philadelphia Archdiocese will be among those participating in the local Stand Up for Religious Freedom rallies being held around the country to express opposition to the Jan. 20 mandate by the U.S. Health and Human Services Department that all private health-care plans must cover sterilization, abortion-causing drugs and contraception.

Philadelphia Archbishop Charles Chaput has called it "bad law with very dangerous implications."

The local rally is scheduled for noon Friday at the Liberty Bell on Independence Mall.

Scheduled speakers include Bishop Timothy Senior, of the Archdiocese; Matthew Franck, director of the William E. and Carol G. Simon Center on Religion and the Constitution at the Witherspoon Institute; Rosalie Mirenda, president of Neumann University; Ronald Rak, president and CEO of St. Peter's Health Care System; Bill Williams, past president of the Catholic Medical Association; Lori Windham, senior counsel of the Becket Fund; Samuel Casey, managing director and general counsel for the Jubilee Campaign's Law of Life Project; and the Rev. Joseph Watkins, pastor of Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church.
