Lieberthal selected to Phillies' Wall of Fame

The Phillies again avoided the tumult that would have accompanied Curt Schilling's selection to the team's Wall of Fame.

The Phillies announced that catcher Mike Lieberthal will be enshrined on Aug. 10. The announcement comes on the final day of a series with the Dodgers, the only other team that Lieberthal played for.

He is the third catcher among the 34 members, joining Bob Boone and Darren Daulton.

"What a tremendous honor it is to be added to the Wall of Fame along with some of the greatest players in Phillies history," Lieberthal, 40, said. "I look forward to sharing the dedication with the greatest fans in baseball."

The Phillies' first-round pick in 1990, he played 14 seasons in the big leagues, 13 with the Phillies and one with the Dodgers in his hometown.

Lieberthal is Phillies' career leader among catchers in games caught (1,139), home runs (149) and hits (1,128). He and Jack Clements (1884-97) are the only catchers in Phillies history to surpass 1,000 hits. He also has the club record with 10 consecutive Opening Day starts as a catcher, ia a two-time All-Star, won the Gold Glove in 1999 and had a career average of .275.

Boone and Daulton will attend the ceremonies along with Steve Carlton, Mike Schmidt, Larry Bowa, Dick Allen, Greg Luzinski, Garry Maddox, Tony Taylor, Dallas Green, Juan Samuel and John Kruk.

Kruk was inducted last year when Schilling was also on the ballot.
