LAURELDALE — The senior members of Ss. Neumann-Goretti High's baseball team now have an extra reason to forever remember their graduation ceremony.

A baseball game will surround it.

Thursday afternoon at Muhlenberg High, right outside Reading, the Saints began to play Blue Mountain in a PIAA Class AAA quarterfinal. After two weather delays totaling 57 minutes apiece — rain the first time, lightning/rain the second — the umps sent everyone home at 7:03, and a decision was made to finish the game Friday.

One problem: N-G's graduation is scheduled for 9 a.m. at Temple's Liacouras Center. So, though everyone would have preferred an early completion, the teams won't get rolling again until 4 p.m.

The score is tied, 2-2, in the bottom of the fourth. N-G has the bases loaded with one away. The Saints scored twice in the third thanks to Joey Gorman's double and Marty Venafro's groundout. Junior righthander John LaMotta was touched for unearned runs in the third and fourth.

The Class AAAA quarterfinal between La Salle and Central Dauphin, also scheduled for Muhlenberg, was postponed. It will be played Friday (same site), with a starting time no earlier than 5 o'clock.
