Suspect in killings believed in home

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Authorities searching for a man charged with fatally shooting three people near Auburn University converged Monday night on a house in Alabama's capital where they believe he may be hiding.

Dozens of police cruisers, trucks, and vans surrounded the house, and officers were seen moving around outside on local television footage.

Montgomery police spokeswoman Regina Duckett said police received a tip that Desmonte Leonard was in the house.

Authorities said Leonard was charged with three counts of capital murder in the shooting Saturday night during a pool party. He is also accused of wounding three others.

The dead included two former Auburn football players, and another was among the wounded.

Earlier in the day, police arrested two men accused of hindering the search.

1 dead in Nev. tunnel collapse

LAS VEGAS - One worker was killed and another injured in a tunnel collapse near Lake Mead National Recreation Area.

A spokesman for the Southern Nevada Water Authority says it was unclear how many other workers may have been involved in the accident.

The tunnel is part of a troubled effort to drill a third drinking-water supply line to the Lake Mead reservoir.

The project has been beset by floodings and cave-ins since construction began in 2009 and is about two years behind schedule.

Terror defendant still in solitary

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - An Iraqi man facing terrorism charges in Kentucky has been held in solitary confinement for more than a year with no contact with other inmates or access to television, radio, or outdoor recreation, his attorney said.

The conditions under which Mohanad Shareef Hammadi, 24, has been held violate his constitutional rights, defense lawyer Jim Earhart said.

"It's horrendous," Earhart said. "He's doing about as well as could be expected if you put someone in a room by himself for a year."

Earhart has asked U.S. District Judge Thomas B. Russell to release Hammadi on bail until his Aug. 27 trial in Bowling Green.

Hammadi faces 12 charges, including attempting to send material support such as rocket-propelled grenade launchers, sniper rifles, machine guns, and explosives to al-Qaeda.

A codefendant in the case, Waad Ramadan Alwan, 30, has pleaded guilty and is awaiting sentencing Oct. 2.

Woman is set on fire with gas

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. - A woman was severely burned after being doused in gasoline and lit on fire outside a 7-Eleven store in South Florida in a dispute with the father of her child, police said.

She had been waiting in Boynton Beach to pick up a 4-year-old son in shared custody, police said.

Roosevelt Mondesir, 52, arrived without the boy and began throwing gasoline on the unidentified woman's car and body, according to a police affidavit.

She tried to run away, but police said the man chased her with a knife and ignited her.

The victim is expected to survive.
