Thomas L. Carter, 82, of Gladwyne, a radiologist at Jeanes Hospital in Philadelphia from 2002 until his retirement in 2007, died of complications from pneumonia on Friday, June 8, at Bryn Mawr Hospital.

Born in Springfield, Delaware County, Dr. Carter graduated from Upper Darby High School in 1948, earned a bachelor's degree at Harvard University in 1952, and graduated from what is now Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University in 1956.

His wife, Leonora, said that after completing his internship and residency in the Navy, her husband was a Navy flight surgeon in the Philippines and Japan.

Returning to civilian life, he completed a residency in radiology at the Mayo Clinic in 1963 and worked from 1963 to 1966 as a radiologist in Fresno, Calif., his wife said.

From 1966 to 1983, Dr. Carter was a radiologist at what is now Scripps Memorial Hospital in Chula Vista, Calif. While there, he completed courses in nuclear medicine at the University of California. He was board-certified in radiology and nuclear medicine.

From 1983 to 2000, he was a radiologist at J.C. Blair Memorial Hospital in Huntingdon, Pa., and from 2000 at Chambersburg (Pa.) Hospital before moving to Jeanes in 2002.

In California and in Huntingdon, his wife said, Dr. Carter taught Sunday school classes at Assembly of God churches. In the Philadelphia region, he taught such classes at Church on the Hill, an Assembly of God congregation in Bala Cynwyd.

Besides his wife, Dr. Carter is survived by sons Thomas L. Jr., W. Bradford, Stephen, and David and eight grandchildren.

A visitation was set from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday, June 14, at Church on the Hill, 221 Ashland Ave., Bala Cynwyd, before an 11 a.m. memorial service there, with interment in Calvary Cemetery in West Conshohocken.
