For kicks: The first match in the John Hackworth era is actually a rematch: The Union defeated D.C. United, 2-1, in U.S. Open Cup play two weeks ago, a physical affair that took extra time to settle in Maryland. United hasn't forgotten what went down, especially midfielder Brandon McDonald, who received a red card after getting into a skirmish with Union defender Carlos Valdes, who will play in this match but is out for the June 26 USOC quarterfinal game against Harrisburg. "We are going in with a chip on our shoulder," McDonald told the team's website. "They took away Open Cup from us, which is something we really wanted collectively as a group. So we have to come out and prove that that was a fluke." One United advantage: The return of both Dejan Jakovic and top goal scorer Dwayne DeRosario. Both were with the Canadian national team during the two-week break from MLS play for FIFA World Cup qualifying … The Union get a pair of players back from World Cup qualifying, as well as defender Porfirio Lopez (Costa Rica) and Gabriel Gomez (Panama) … United goalkeeper Bill Hamid ranks second in the league overall with a 0.83 goals against average and a pair of shutouts in six matches.
