Two area boats - Merion Mercy in the junior four and Mount St. Joseph in the junior eight - won races Saturday to advance to the semifinals of the Henley Women's Regatta in Henley-on-Thames, England.

The races were contested in fierce headwinds and current that lengthened finish times considerably. The semifinals and finals are scheduled for Sunday.

Merion Mercy, the defending champion in the event, easily defeated England's Molesey Boat Club, completing the 1,500-meter course in 8 minutes, 2 seconds.

Mount St. Joseph beat Sir William Borlase's Grammar School (England) by two boat lengths, clocking 6:39.

Conestoga's junior quad won its morning race, topping Latymer Upper School of London by 51/4 lengths, before losing in the afternoon to England's Headington School.

A junior eight and junior four from Mount St. Joseph also lost in the morning.

The Magic will face Green Lake of Seattle in the semifinals at 5:45 a.m. Philadelphia time.

Merion Mercy will compete against England's Lady E. Holles an hour later.
