Philly's Jennings wins by decision; injured Chambers loses

PHILADELPHIA'S Bryant Jennings continued his effort to lay claim to the title of "best American heavyweight" with a unanimous decision over Steve Collins for the vacant USBA title Saturday in Newark, N.J.

Jennings won all 10 rounds on all three scorecards (100-89) and knocked Collins into the ropes in the fourth round with a left jab/right uppercut combination to force a standing eight count.

Jennings, 27, improved to 14-0 with six knockouts and won for the third time this year on the NBC Sports Network "Fight Night" series. Although not as impressive as his ninth-round stoppage of former WBO heavyweight champion Sergei Liakhovich in his previous appearance, the late-blooming Jennings continues to learn and get better. He entered the night ranked No. 15 by the IBF. Collins dropped to 25-2-1 (18 KOs).

"I don't think he will ever get in there with a guy with a better chin than he had Saturday night," promoter J Russell Peltz said. "That guy took everything."

Jennings is likely to fight next in August or early September.

Things did not go as well for another Philadelphia heavyweight. Eddie Chambers injured his left bicep in the first round, rendering his left hand practically useless, and lost by unanimous decision to Tomas Adamek for the IBF North American title.

Adamek (46-2, 28 KOs) won on the scorecards by 116-112, 116-112 and 119-109 in front of a hometown crowd. The Polish-born Adamek is based in Jersey City.

"I'm sure I would have won the fight if I had both hands," Chambers said afterward. "I threw a hook off my jab and his big arm got in the way. I must have torn something in the bicep. I tried later to throw some punches with my left, but I couldn't muscle anything with my left. I had to figure out what to do."

Chambers (36-3, 18 KOs) was fighting for the first time since February 2011, after his last two bouts were canceled due to injury. He weighed in at 225 pounds.

"I don't like to sound brash, but I would have won if I didn't get hurt," Chambers said. "I worked so hard to get ready for this fight and I was in the best shape of my life." n
