Probe continues into drowning of boy, 7, in Delco

Brookhaven police are continuing their investigation into the drowning of a 7-year-old boy at an apartment-complex pool in the Delaware County borough.

So far, however, "it looks to be just an accidental drowning," Police Chief John Eller said this afternoon.

The county medical examiner's office has identified the victim as Devin Lee Caldwell, of Chester. Police said that the boy fell into deep water shortly before 3:30 p.m. on Sunday.

Police determined that the boy had been in the wading pool in the company of relatives. At some point, they lost track of him. He left the wading area and slipped into the adult pool, where he struggled to get to the surface.

A man identified as Jesus Nieves, a resident of the complex, plunged into the water, pulled out the boy, and performed CPR in an attempt to revive him. Eller said police and the 16-year-old lifeguard on duty had joined in the unsuccessful rescue attempt.

The boy was pronounced dead at Crozer-Chester Medical Center.
