Drug charges for retired Norristown detective

Posted: June 22, 2012

Montgomery County officials said Thursday that a retired Norristown police detective-sergeant had been arrested on charges of engaging in illegal bookmaking and drug trafficking.

Jack Pennington, 66, was charged with felony drug violations, according to the county District Attorney's Office.

An investigation that began in March culminated Tuesday, officials said, when detectives followed Pennington to a meeting with his alleged methamphetamine supplier at the Plymouth Meeting Mall. Police said they recovered drugs, cash, and guns in searches of Pennington's car and his Upper Merion home.

Pennington was arraigned Thursday by District Judge James Gallagher. Bail was set at $2 million, officials said. A preliminary hearing was set for next Friday. - Tom Infield
