Pope, cardinals meet on leak

VATICAN CITY - Pope Benedict XVI convened a special meeting of cardinals Saturday for advice on how to deal with the Vatican's leaked documents scandal - another sign of the damage the leaks have done to trust in the Holy See's governance.

Benedict was already scheduled to attend a regular meeting of the heads of Vatican offices Saturday morning. The Vatican press office said he added a second meeting later in the day with other cardinals in a bid to try to "restore a climate of serenity and trust" in the church.

The Vatican said over the coming days he will meet with still more cardinals gathering in Rome for a church feast day on Friday.

The Vatican has been scrambling to contain the damage after the leak of hundreds of documents exposed corruption, political infighting, and power struggles at the highest level of the Catholic Church. - AP

Climate activists take to palace

LONDON - Four climate-change activists scaled gates at Queen Elizabeth II's Buckingham Palace home on Saturday and locked themselves to railings in a protest demanding more urgent action to cut greenhouse gas emissions.

London's Metropolitan Police said the four, from the Climate Siren environmentalist movement, had climbed up a gate at the front of the palace and secured themselves to it, sitting with their legs through the railings.

About 100 people watched as the protesters unfurled a banner quoting a 2008 speech by Prince Charles warning about a lack of progress on tacking climate change. The queen was not at the palace Saturday. - AP

Kenya police say bomb item seized

NAIROBI - A Kenyan official says police seized material they believe can be used to assemble a bomb, a day after the U.S. warned of an imminent terrorist attack in Kenya.

A police official, who asked for anonymity because he is not authorized to speak to the press, said Saturday that three suspects dropped a bag and ran after police confronted them near a crowded slum.

The official said police found 13 pounds of ammonium nitrate and other items they believe can be used to make a bomb. Officials believe ammonium nitrate was used for a bomb that killed one and injured 32 in Nairobi last month.

Roof collapses at mall in Canada

ELLIOT LAKE, Ontario - A roof has partially collapsed at a busy mall in Canada, prompting an evacuation and a search for anyone who might have been injured.

A portion of the roof that serves as a parking area crumbled Saturday afternoon, exposing metal and concrete supports at the Algo Centre Mall in Elliot Lake.

Joe Drazil, a store employee, said everybody was cleared from the mall. The collapse triggered a gas leak and prompted emergency officials to shut off the mall's power. - AP
