Welcome, America, to our 4th

10 festive days of Philadelphia freedom-flavored events begin Monday.

Posted: June 26, 2012

Alan Krawitz is spending Monday and Tuesday stocking up on bread and cheese - 500 to 700 loaves of bread and about 100 pounds of cheese.

Krawitz, owner of Say Cheese Philadelphia, a food truck specializing in grilled cheese, is preparing for his first year at Taste of Philadelphia, held Friday through Sunday at Penn's Landing as part of the 10-day Wawa Welcome America celebration that begins Monday.

"Because of the scope and the number of Philadelphians present, you really need to put your best foot forward," said Krawitz, who plans on serving barbecue grilled chicken cheese and a Gruyere grilled cheese with caramelized onions.

Festivities get under way 10 a.m. Monday with a Go 4th & Learn About History event in Franklin Square. The focus will be Wawa dairy, now celebrating its 100th year.

This year also marks the 20th anniversary of the hoagie's being named Philadelphia's official sandwich. Wawa Hoagie Day, held Wednesday at noon, will honor the sandwich with a 4.5-ton Italian hoagie served on Independence Mall, said Laurie Bruce, Wawa spokeswoman.

This year's Fourth of July party on the Benjamin Franklin Parkway will feature fireworks and music by the Roots.
