DELAWARE CITY, Del. - Delaware state police are investigating the discovery of a human skull near Pea Patch Island.
Authorities said a New Jersey man found the skull Sunday evening in the water about four feet from the shore of the island, which sits in the Delaware River just off Delaware City.
Investigators said the man took the skull with him back to Carneys Point, Salem County, then contacted state police. The skull has been turned over to the state medical examiner's office for possible identification. The office said the skull had been in the water for more than six months. Officials said forensic testing of the skull is expected to take several months.
