Cluster of Philly sports bombshells 20 years ago

THE DEATH of Jerome Brown 20 years ago today was a devastating loss in the middle of a unique time in Philadelphia sports involving star athletes.

On June 20, the Flyers acquired the rights to Eric Lindros in a blockbuster trade with Quebec. The Flyers sent Ron Hextall, Steve Duchesne, Kerry Huffman, Mike Ricci, Peter Forsberg, Chris Simon, first-round picks in the 1993 and 1994 NHL drafts and $15 million to the Nordiques. The deal led to a hearing within days involving the Flyers, Nordiques and Rangers. Arbitrator Larry Bertuzzi awarded the Flyers the rights to Lindros on June 30. The trade came 10 days after Bob Clarke returned to the Flyers as senior vice president. Clarke had been fired as the Flyers' general manager in 1990 and spent two seasons as the GM of the Minnesota North Stars.

On June 17, the Sixers traded Charles Barkley to the Phoenix Suns for Jeff Hornacek, Tim Perry and Andrew Lang. The Sixers would finish the 1992-93 season 25-56; the Suns would win 62 games and face Michael Jordan and the Bulls in the NBA Finals. The deal came less than a month after Doug Moe was hired as coach. Moe would not last a full season, fired after going 19-37.

On June 24, the Phillies would begin a stretch in which they went 4-16 into the All-Star break to fall 16 games under .500. They would finish 70-92 and 26 games out in the NL East, a season before their magical 1993 run. John Kruk was leading the league in hitting at the time and would finish third at .323, seven points behind San Diego's Gary Sheffield.
