Freedoms' specials: King, Evert

Tennis legends Billie Jean King and Chris Evert and soccer players from the Union will make special appearances next month at Freedoms games this season.

King is the owner of the Freedoms, who play their World TeamTennis home matches at Villanova University's Pavilion. The 40th anniversary of her French Open win will be celebrated on July 14, Bastille Day, when the team hosts the Springfield Lasers. The first 250 fans will receive a Billie Jean King bobble head.

A "Meet the Team" party is scheduled for July 10, when James Blake and the Freedoms open the season against the Sacramento Capitals. Season-ticket holders will have a chance to mingle with the players.

Rising star Ryan Harrison will make his WTT debut against the Boston Lobsters on July 11, "Macy's Kids and Teen Night," which includes a halftime fashion show and other activities. The first 400 youngsters 14 and under will receive a free racket.

Select players from Major League Soccer's Union will sign autographs on July 16, "Twin Night," when the world's top doubles team, Bob and Mike Bryan, and twins Karolina and Kristyna Pliskova play for the Freedoms against the Kansas City Explorers.

Evert will be at the July 19 match with the Orange County Breakers when the Billie Jean King Character Award will be presented to 10 local tennis players.

Other events include "Guys' Night Out" on July 20, with John McEnroe and Martina Hingis scheduled to play for the New York Sportimes and "Macy's Girls' Night Out" on July 25, when women can get their photo taken with the Freedoms' Mark Philippoussis.
