Shiela Coles Neibauer, 67, of Huntingdon Valley, who retired in 2010 after 12 years as a long-term care ombudsman for the Northwest Interfaith Movement, died Sunday, June 24, of melanoma at home.

Mrs. Neibauer investigated and worked to resolve complaints about the rights of those living in nursing homes in Northwest Philadelphia, a son, Michael, said.

It was one of a series of jobs involving the elderly at which Mrs. Neibauer worked after completing her college education in the year she turned 44.

"She had the patience to listen to someone who had dementia or Alzheimer's," her son said.

"She enjoyed very much hearing the stories of older citizens, because she felt they always had a great deal to share."

Born in Philadelphia, Mrs. Neibauer graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls in 1962 and, after a career of clerical jobs mostly for nonprofit organizations, she earned a bachelor's degree in sociology and community health at St. Joseph's University in 1989.

Mrs. Neibauer was a case manager from 1989 to 1997 and a coordinator from 1992 to 1997 for the City Line Aging Support Program of Jewish Family and Children's Service, which helped low-income seniors.

Mrs. Neibauer went into private practice with a colleague in 1997-98, helping older adults through their firm, AgeOld Solutions.

In 1998, her son said, she was executive director of the Long Term Care Consortium of the Main Line.

Besides her son, she is survived by her husband, Fred; her parents, Gertrude and Robert Coles; another son, Eric; and three grandchildren.

Services were set for 10:30 a.m. Thursday, June 28, at Goldsteins' Rosenberg's Raphael-Sacks, 6410 N. Broad St.
