Five families in the Kingsessing section of Southwest Philadelphia lost their homes late Tuesday night in a fire that began in a garage and spread to adjoining rowhouses on the 1000 block of S. 53d Street, according to city fire officials.
About 70 people were evacuated during the fire, which went to three alarms before being brought under control after 90 minutes, around 12:30 a.m. Wednesday. No injuries were reported.
The American Red Cross of Southeastern Pennsylvania said it was providing temporary shelter and counseling to the displaced families, including nine adults and 12 children. - Bob Warner
