Man slain in broad daylight

A man was shot and killed under a train trestle on a busy North Philadelphia street in broad daylight late Thursday morning, police said.

The victim, who remained unidentified later Thursday but was estimated to be in his late teens, was under the train bridge when someone shot him about 11:50 a.m., police said. Suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest, the victim was rushed by police to nearby Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead at 12:23 p.m.

Cops were still investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing and hadn't recovered a weapon or made any arrests as of Thursday night.

Cops: Mom and daughter stabbed

29th and Wharton streets, Grays Ferry

A mother and her daughter were recovering in the hospital Thursday night after cops say they were attacked and stabbed by a group of women from their neighborhood.

Police said the mother, 37, and her 17-year-old daughter were at a corner in Grays Ferry shortly after 4 p.m. when four women from the neighborhood attacked them. The mother was stabbed once in the back of her head, police said, and the daughter was stabbed in the right eye, left arm and upper lip, cops said.

Both victims were taken by police to the Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania and listed in stable condition later Thursday.

No arrests were made.

Off-duty cop breaks leg in chase

15th and Walnut streets, Center City

An off-duty cop broke his leg after he saw a woman shoplifting in Center City Thursday afternoon and tried to chase her, cops said.

The officer was inside a Gap store shortly after 3 p.m. with his wife when he saw a woman shoplifting in the store, cops said. He chased the woman, according to police, but fell and fractured his left femur. He was taken to Hahnemann University Hospital, police said, where he'll have surgery.

Police said that they were able to arrest the shoplifter.

Woman's body found in river

Delaware River near Walnut Street, Society Hill

Police are investigating the death of a woman whose body was found floating in the Delaware River off Penn's Landing.

A marine unit pulled the body from the water just before noon near the Independence Seaport Museum, officials said.

The woman appears to be in her early 20s, police said. She had no identification and there were no visible signs of trauma.

The body was taken to the Medical Examiner's Office for an autopsy to determine the cause of death.
