The term "sports hernia" is terribly misleading, says Dr. William Meyers, a leader in the field whose practice is headquartered at the Navy Yard. Meyers says the term "core muscle injury" is much more correct.
"A person can tear any of the many muscles in the pelvis," he said. "Sometimes the tears cause instability of the pubic joint and the pain continues. There is no bulge, and hernia repair does not generally correct the problems."
